COURSE DESCRIPTION

 

Core/Foundation Subjects – 12 UNITS

 

EDF 200 – History and Philosophy of Education. This course covers a thorough analysis and survey on the various philosophical orientations as they are related to the theory of knowledge.

 

EDF 201 – Foundations of Education.  This course covers sociological, psychological, and anthropological aspects of the educational system, stressing the educational structure, the teaching-learning processes, human behavior and development, individual differences and the dynamics of learning, motivating, and measurement and evaluation.

 

EDF 202- Methods of Research. This course focuses on research processes and methodology which includes research conceptualization/planning, problem and hypothesis formulation, research design, data analysis, presentation, writing and reporting.  It also includes model and theory testing and building.

 

EDF 203- Statistics in Education. This lecture-practicum course deals with statistical methods and principles as they apply to education, psychology, sciences agriculture, business, and others. It covers descriptive and inferential statistics needed to interpret data and solve research problems. It deals with the principles, theories, and processes of selection and use of statistics and statistical test for summarizing, analyzing, and interpreting research data.

 

Major Subjects – 15 units

 

Music 200- Music Theory and Solfegio- This course is an in-depth study of materials and structures of music. It includes further training in music reading and ear training, and a study of basic functional harmony. It also involves note reading and singing with due consideration to intonations and duration of notes.

 

Mus 210 – Music Literature. This course covers history of Music from its inception during the Middle Ages through the Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Modern Periods.  The latter makes the student familiar with Philippine Music and its composers. The history and works of Philippine composers are likewise studied as well as the various tunes of Philippine Music.

 

Mus 220- Advanced Music Theory and Solfegio. This is an advanced study on the materials and structures of music and the elements of music (rhythm, melody, harmony & form) to equip the students with the needed musicianship of the competent music teacher. It further deals on the study on the construction of chords, intervals, rhythmic and melodic dictation, and notation. It also includes Solfegio (Music reading) using both the treble clef and bass clef and fixed-do and movable-do methods of note reading.

 

Mus 230 – Applied Music (Laboratory). This course is an application of music and its theory in the field of three musical expressions and forms: 1) the human voice and its resulting techniques training in general; 2) piano; 3) guitar – the last two involving  rudimentary lessons in Grade I to the higher techniques in playing the instruments.

 

Mus 240 – Strategies in Teaching Music. The course is survey of the different strategies in teaching Music used in the elementary and secondary levels.  It provides the formulation of objectives, the selection of and organization of teaching-learning experiences into units, as well as lesson planning and application of these in peer teaching.

 

Mus 250 – Chorus and Conducting. This is a course focused on techniques of leading a choir and the techniques on voice culture, the training of the choral group, analysis and choral work, and research on the most outstanding choral composers and arrangers and their respective pieces.

 

Mus 260 – Composition and Harmony. This course highlights original compositions and the arrangement of original melodies construed by the mind and heart of the composer, and writing a melody as per inspiration be it popular songs or instrumental melodies. The knowledge of the rudiments of music is highly desirable for this course. The techniques of fitting melodies to lyrics or lyrics to melodies is given due attention. The second part entails knowledge of harmony. It teaches the process of combining notes into harmonious combinations: the musical chord of three notes (triad) is the basis of this course, major and minor scales, the study of intervals, the chord progressions are necessary in this course.

 

ELECTIVE/COGNATE SUBJECTS – 9 UNITS

 

Mus 261 – Band Organizing and Conducting. This is a course that covers the theories, principles, and practices in organizing and conducting band.

 

Mus 262 – Organizing and Conducting Rondalla. This is a course that covers the theories, principles, and practices in organizing and conducting Rondalla.

 

Mus 263 – Organizing Drum and Lyre. This is a course that covers the theories, principles and practices in organizing drum and lyre corps.

 

INSTITUTIONAL REQUIREMENTS

 

EDMT 237 – Basic Information Technology and Management System.  This course deals with the fundamental concepts of computer and the utilization of computer system and software to produce quality reports, information sheets, slides and presentations. It includes topics on trends in information technology, operating systems, and word processing using MS Word, electronic spreadsheet using MS Excel, and electronic presentation using MS PowerPoint.

 

 

GS 299 – Graduate Seminar.  This is a preparatory course in the conceptualization, development, and writing of thesis following standards in research in terms of design, format, language, and style.  It includes oral presentation and discussion of current researches in the discipline.
