COURSE DESCRIPTION

Core/Foundation Subjects – 12 UNITS

EDF 200 – History and Philosophy of Education. This course covers a thorough analysis and survey on the various philosophical orientations as they are related to the theory of knowledge.

EDF 201 – Foundations of Education.  This course covers sociological, psychological, and anthropological aspects of the educational system, stressing the educational structure, the teaching-learning processes, human behavior and development, individual differences and the dynamics of learning, motivating, and measurement and evaluation.

EDF 202- Methods of Research. This course focuses on research processes and methodology which includes research conceptualization/planning, problem and hypothesis formulation, research design, data analysis, presentation, writing and reporting.  It also includes model and theory testing and building.

EDF 203- Statistics in Education. This lecture-practicum course deals with statistical methods and principles as they apply to education, psychology, sciences agriculture, business, and others. It covers descriptive and inferential statistics needed to interpret data and solve research problems. It deals with the principles, theories, and processes of selection and use of statistics and statistical test for summarizing, analyzing, and interpreting research data.

Major Subjects – 18 units

SCE 200- Advanced Topics in Biological Science.  This course deals with the methods, concepts, and principles of biology with emphasis on the molecular, cellular, and organismic levels of organization.  It reinforces students’ basic knowledge on reproductive biology, developmental biology, genetics, physiology, taxonomy, ecology, molecular biology, and biotechnology.  It also incorporates the recent biological discoveries and developments.

SCE 201- Advanced Topics in Earth and Space Travel. This course reinforces the student’s knowledge of the earth concepts especially the recent advances or breakthroughs in space travel. Discussions involve the evolution of the earth sciences (Geology, Meteorology, Petrology, Volcanology, Seismology, Hydrology, Astronomy, and Space Technology). Tools and facilities for teaching earth science with appropriate methodology are also included.

SCE 202- Advanced Topics in Chemistry. This course deals with the study of matter, its composition, properties, and the changes it undergoes. It involves balancing chemical equations and the basic principles of laws in Chemistry. It also involves the application of chemistry principles to a specific purpose, which may take the form of new devices, processes, procedures, substances, or chemical products wherein the ultimate beneficiary is society.

SCE 203- Advanced Topics in Physics.  This course builds up on the concepts of force, matter, and energy with the many forms and the changes undergone. The concepts, principles, and theories of physics and the application of such  will help students cope with the demands of today’s highly technological physical system, relativistics, kinematics, dynamics, and gravitation. It also includes electrostatics, magnetostatics, Maxwell’s equation, electromagnetic waves, and optics.

SCE 204- Advanced Topics in Environmental Science.  The course presents Environmental Science as interdisciplinary in nature that integrates many disciplines. These include biology, ecology, geology, hydrology, climatology, meteorology, oceanography, and soil science.  It also integrates the natural sciences with environmental philosophy, ethics, economics, law, impact and planning.  As a whole, the course highlights the relationships between people and their environment towards better appreciation and valuation of the environment.

SCE 205- Trends in Science Instruction. The course deals covers trends and issues in Science instruction in the Philippine educational setting as well as those in other countries.  The course will review previous and present science instruction (approaches, methods, strategies, techniques) in all levels and  endeavors to look into reforms, innovations, new directions, and developments in science instruction.  Developments of science process skills, use of non-conventional and authentic assessment models, and the use of information technology in the teaching of Science are also emphasized.

SCE 208 – Laboratory Teaching in the Sciences.  This is a 3-unit course where two (2) units are allotted for lecture and 1 unit for laboratory. Laboratory and procedural techniques are included and strengthened in the laboratory. Manipulative and observational skills are emphasized through hands-on activities.

ELECTIVE/COGNATE SUBJECTS – 9 UNITS

SED 207 – Science, Technology, Society. The course is designed to integrate the sciences such as biology, chemistry, physics, earth science, astronomy, ecology, and diseases, health, and medicine into one coherent whole and presents a holistic view of how these sciences, their technologies, and the society interact and how they affect each other.  The topics highlights the relevance of science and technology and serve as jump-offs for classroom discussions aimed at enhancing understanding, ensuring effective acquisition of knowledge, and developing critical, and creative thinking and problem-solving. .

SED 208 – Management of Science Programs. This course deals with the different processes which include planning, organizing, staffing, and leading/directing through efficient and effective use of available resources such as human, financial, technological, and natural resources designed to facilitate the production of useful outcomes and decision-making to improve the management of science programs.

SED 209- Seminar in Scientific Research. This course deals with the objectives and components of the science education program, learning objectives, teaching strategies, and expected competencies and attitudes of science teachers and problems and issues in science teaching. The second part of the course deals with the role of media technology in the teaching process and the means by which teachers can use various media resources to enhance teaching skills. Learning activities designed to develop basic competencies needed in evaluating educational outcome are included in the course.

SED 210- Foundation of Science. This course covers the historical and philosophical foundations of science and the contributions of great men and women with the objective of developing scientific and technological awareness that will, in turn, promote national development and progress. It traces the history from ancient to modern times and the philosophies of different times. These philosophies are discussed in the light of present day belief and contention about science.

INSTITUTIONAL REQUIREMENTS

EDMT 237 – Basic Information Technology and Management System.  This course deals with the fundamental concepts of computer and the utilization of computer system and software to produce quality reports, information sheets, slides and presentations. It includes topics on trends in information technology, operating systems, and word processing using MS Word, electronic spreadsheet using MS Excel, and electronic presentation using MS PowerPoint.

GS 299 – Graduate Seminar.  This is a preparatory course in the conceptualization, development, and writing of thesis following standards in research in terms of design, format, language, and style.  It includes oral presentation and discussion of current researches in the discipline.
