Core/Foundation Subjects – 18 units

 

EDAF 301 – Education Perspective I.  This subject covers a wide range of educational issues from various perspectives that illustrates interdisciplinary approach in solving issues/concerns. It encompasses the factors that are contributory to academic success which are also dependent on the stakeholders, mentors, parents and other significant people’s support for students’ progress. Likewise, this subject also includes theories, concepts, and models in the other fields of discipline like psychology, philosophy, anthropology and sociology which are influential in the total development of the learner.

 

EDAF 302 – Education Perspective II.  This course is a classroom-based seminar concentrated on seminal readings, research findings, media reports, as well as studies on the Philippine educational sector. Course requirements include papers and presentations on different issues.

 

EDAF 303– Advanced Research Methods. This course covers different types of research methods, data-gathering instruments, research designs, employing statistical and qualitative procedures to analyze data, as well as interpret and evaluate research reports.

 

EDAF 304 – Advanced Statistics.  This subject focuses on advanced statistical methods and the application of these techniques to practical research. It includes the use of statistical package in order to catch up with the advances in software technology and facilitate the conduct of research.

 

EDAF 305 – Quality Assurance and National Development. This course deals with different parameters on how improve quality education vis-a-vis standards. It looks into approaches aimed at developing quality institutions by considering the interface of human, material, and physical resources. This course also covers the vital role of research and extension for national development and highlights the best practices of educational institutions which includes models, concepts, and organizational behaviour among others.

 

EDAF 306 – Environmental Planning and Management for Sustainable Development. This course tackles environmental integration in the  local and national development planning and management of private and public agencies on the following topics—land use planning, integrated watershed management, integrated coastal zone management, management of protected areas and conservation of endangered and threatened species, environment and natural resources accounting, environmental impact assessment of development projects and sectors, environmental health risk assessment and management, domestic waste management, industrial pollution prevention and control, appropriate technologies for waste reuse, recycling and alternative utilization, environmental rehabilitation, and recovery from natural disasters and environmental awareness, developmental communication, and people’s participation which will effect a rational approach to sustainable development plan. Inclusion of environmental legislation to development sectors will also be discussed.

 

Major Subjects – 24 units

 

SciEd 301 – Curriculum Development.  This course covers the process of rational science curriculum planning in all levels and strategies of curriculum change.  It also studies implications of the Filipino value system on development of a functional science curriculum for the Filipino child and integrates concepts of administration and supervision and their relevance to general structure and operation of Science and Technology education.  Problems and approaches related to the supervision in Science and Technology education are highlighted with emphasis on the Philippines experience.

 

SciEd 302 – Trends and Issues in Science Education. This course presents the trends and issues in Science Education in the Philippine Education system in comparison from those in other countries. It identifies the difficulties of teachers in teaching Science and Technology from the elementary to the college level and the ripple effect of these problems in the larger area in the academe. The course also includes trends in science and technology education and evaluates their applicability in the Philippine setting. Problems and issues identified will be critically and objectively analyzed with proposed recommendations. 

 

SciEd 303 – Special Problems in Ecology. This course deals with the scientific study of the interactions or relationships between living organisms and their environment, both the physical and the biotic environment, including their distribution and abundance.  It integrates a number of concepts and principles involving different approaches to address ecological problems namely evolutionary ecology, community ecology, landscape ecology, and global ecology.  It also features recent ecological researches/studies.

 

SciEd 304 – Special Problems in Biology and Biotechnology. This course deals with the biological molecules, their structure, and behavior in the biological system.  It focuses on some essential topics such as epigenomics and development, stem cell technology, tissue culture, cancer biology, gene therapy, and apoptosis.  It also discusses the various breakthroughs in biology that revolutionize medicine and agriculture and the various tools and techniques used to unravel and understand the mechanisms involved in many biological processes.

 

SciEd 305 – Special Problems in Earth Science. This course focuses on the fundamental materials of the earth, its internal characteristics, processes that have shaped the surface of the earth.  It also presents environmental or geological problems such as volcanoes, earthquakes, climate, landslides, groundwater, rivers, wind, glaciers, ocean, mineral and energy resources and physiographic features of the Philippines.     

         

SciEd 306 – Special Problems in Chemistry. This course incorporates thermochemistry and chemical thermodynamics and their applications to such areas as metallurgy, thermal pollution, and the energy crisis. It also includes topics in organic chemistry, introduction to biochemistry, concepts of organic reactive mechanisms and biochemical processes encountered in biological and related science. It also shows how chemical techniques can be used to deduce the structure of vital natural products such as DNA.

 

 

SciEd 307 – Special Problems in Physics . This course incorporates special relativity, general relativity and Quantum Physics. Special relativity includes concepts of inertial reference frames, the operation and results of the Michelson-Morley experiment, the postulates of special relativity as well as the relativity of time and length. General relativity explains the principle of equivalence and gravitational lensing. Quantum physics calculates the wavelengths of radiation and utilizes the concept of atomic energy levels to explain other atomic phenomena.

 

SciEd 308 – Special Problems in Genetics and Evolution. This course presents molecular properties of genetic material, its ability to replicate, to recombine, to mutate, and to dictate RNA and protein synthesis.  It also includes studies on the ordering of genes within chromosomes and the capacity of genes to segregate and assort as well as the capacity functional interactions between genes, genetic regulation, and genes in population.

SciEd 309 – Recent Advances in Scientific Research. This course deals on the new developments of science and technology along earth science, biology biotechnology, agriculture, fisheries, environmental science, chemistry and physics. Research outputs, latest scientific and technological breakthroughs and other related scientific studies and/or activities are included in the course.

 

SciEd 310 – Evaluation in Science Education. The course deals with conceptual framework for educational evaluation and its practical considerations. It is designed specifically for Science teachers on how they will assess the effectiveness of their education program using any of the evaluation models. It includes construction, validation, and interpretation of tests. Activities are designed to develop competencies needed in the evaluation of conventional outcomes.

         

SciEd 311 – Pedagogies in College Teaching. This course presents systematics approaches, methods, strategies, and techniques appropriate in the tertiary level. Various instructional theories and principles will be used as bases in improving/advancing the practice or profession of teaching.  Emphasis is given on the universal/global practices in college teaching which are goal and output oriented.

 

SciEd 312 – Research Design and Instrumentation.  This is a 3-unit course covering various research designs in the field of sciences like causal, cohort, cross-sectional, experimental, and quasi-experimental designs. The subject includes the methods of gathering the needed data, experimentation, observation, and interview among others.

 

Ted Mgt. 327 – Advanced Information Technology and Management System. The course is an application of information technology in organizations specifically the roles and responsibilities of educational manpower and staff professionals in the planning and development of management information systems (MIS).

 

GS 399 – Graduate Seminar.  This is a preparatory course in the conceptualization, development, and writing of dissertation following standards in research in terms of design, format, language, and style.  It includes oral presentation and discussion of current researches in the discipline.
